About Harry Coates

Harry Coates is an Irish artist based in Aghadowey, best known for his contemplative and introspective figurative paintings. Working through close observation, expressive marks and layered textures, he aims to capture more than a subject’s likeness — revealing something of their attitude, emotion or inner life.
Harry is also an experienced educator who has worked extensively with adult and community groups. His work has featured in solo and group exhibitions across Ireland and the UK, including Royal Ulster Academy exhibitions, and he has been Artistic Director of the Steinbeck Festival in Limavady since 2018.
